Daggerheart: Broken Lands - 3
Session Zero - Part Three. Welcoming Player Three
Kapeshyo’s gone... in theory. I’d thought that Sha’nesh had gone as well, but somehow he kept popping in. My players are being a bit unruly, but let's get on with manifesting Player 3.
Player 3’s Agenda is: [6] + [1] = 7: HERO. Wants to do the right thing, to be a hero, to be recognised as such. Ask: how can they show heroism and what does it cost.
For player tags, I roll a [5] for 2 tags. Rolling the first tag I get [5] & [2]. That seems familiar: Romantic. Hmm… what if I reverse them and look at [2] & [5]? Invested, so let's go with that instead. For the second tag we have [4] & [2]: Kind.
GM: And with that, let's welcome Player 3 to the game.
Player 3: Thank you so much for having me. I am psyched for this game.
GM: That’s great to hear. So, have you decided what sort of character you’re going to play?
Player 3: I was thinking Guardian, but that feels like I’d be treading a bit on Kpeshyo’s toes. Oh, I like the picture of the Archer Girl with the tiger. A pet! I’ve got to go with beastbound ranger! Oh, but what pet? What’s a good animal!? I mean, I’m going to play a Faun, maybe… but what if I was a Katari with a tiger…
GM: I’m not sure I saw flighty in the tags…
Player 3: Hey, listen! I’ve figured it out! I’m going to be a faerie beastbound ranger. I’m small - about 3 foot tall - and my companion is some sort of Kingfisher bird, like a really, really large kookaburra!
GM: You want to use the companion as a mount.
Player 3: I want to use the companion as a mount!
GM: A kookaburra mount.
Player 3: Yeah, a giant kookaburra.
GM: You’re an Australian faerie ranger with a Kookaburra mount.
Player 3: I’m not Australian.
GM: Actually, when you get down to it...
Player 3 → Nyĩt: What? I’m of the Sůůchynoti. My name is Nyĩt and I’m a noble.
GM: Hang on… you’re a ranger.
Nyĩt: Yes? That’s right.
GM: But a ranger…
Nyĩt: What’s odd about that? I’m the fifth child, so forget any sort of inheritance, plus there's my family duties. We guard the boundary between this realm and the fae realms, the Shimmer.
GM: Interesting. Okay, let’s look at the background questions. A terrible creature hurt your community and you’ve vowed to hunt them down. What are they, and what unique trail or sign do they leave behind?
Nyĩt: You’re talking about the Nůschĩk? Nasty fae beast that came through the Shimmer to our realm. Our family is supposed to hold the boundary between the Fae Realms and here, and we failed. So I will hunt it down.
GM: Describe it for me.
Nyĩt: It’s kinda like a bear but with a much more elongated snout, and it has a long tail that’s kinda lizard-like that drags on the ground. It uses the tail as a counter balance when it’s standing bipedal (it can move on all fours for speed, or upright, which frees its hands). It’s quite dexterous with its front claws, and they’re sharp. It also has a wicked bite that can be quite infectious due to bacteria in its saliva.
GM: Well, that’s suitably nightmarish.
Nyĩt: I know, right? Anyway, to help restore the family honour for allowing this thing through and failing to protect Tãscho, I have to hunt it down.
GM: All right, next question: Your first kill almost killed you. What was it, and what part of you was never the same after the event?
Nyĩt: Never underestimate the Chyo̊o̊ttantã, the night-stalkers. Sleek black felines. There was a pack that was threatening the farmlands around Pahe̊. I thought I was ready for them, but I failed to properly assess the situation - I didn't realise it was juveniles I was tracking. I’d tracked them back to their lair, stepped right into the mother’s territory... I still have the scars along my abdomen. I learned just how terrifying their shadow-meld abilities are that night. I was able to save her kittens, though. They're some of our best hunting cats.
GM: You’ve travelled many dangerous lands, but what is the one place you refuse to go?
Nyĩt: Home. Until the Nůschĩk is dead.
GM: All right, thank you, Nyĩt. Finally, do you know your experiences?
Nyĩt: Oh you betcha. “Watcher of the night-terrors” and “There is always more to learn.”
GM: Thank you.
